Kyyti

Vasemmalta korvalliselta nousee pystysuoraan valkea sulka. Silmien syvänruskeaa värikalvoa ympäröi virheetön valkuainen.

Aurinko on lämmittänyt auton kuumaksi.

The Ride

A woman asked for a ride on behalf of her friend and the man promised to offer one. He waits, feels anxious and likes to get on the road soon. He glances at his watch.

Sand makes scrunching sounds when a woman approaches the man and greets him with a smile. Confused, he answers the greeting, believing that the woman does not notice his embarrassment. The woman is beautiful and graceful, only half his age. Her hair is brown and short, brushed in a way that makes it look wind-blown, thus creating an impression of naturalness. Behind her left ear stands a white feather. Her eyes are deep brown in color surrounded by pure whiteness.

The car is burning hot because of the sun. The air conditioner hums and emits chilled air into the car. The man explores the woman with words, probing her with questions. The woman answers the man, says more than is asked, wanting to share her ideas and values. She allures the man to open up, too; tempts him to tell about himself, his life.

In the woman's words, the man faces a complete new world, a philosophy of life that is different from anything he has previously experienced. He wants to feel and understand it deeply. Their shared thoughts combine and create something new. The journey goes on.

Woman sits silently next to the driver. She looks ahead, follows the road flowing under the wheels. They are both silent. The scenery looks new, although seen many times before. For the first time in his life, the man obeys the speed limits because he wants to continue the silent togetherness as long as possible.

The journey ends. The woman gets out of the car. She peeks at the man and teases him with a smile. She knows without a doubt what the man has been thinking of during the journey. She raises her palm towards the man, makes a fist and opens it again, and closes and opens, and flashes the man out of her life.

After she left, the man continues the journey. He touches the warmth the woman's body left on the seat next to him. The memory of the woman's red toe nails winks in the legroom.

Valkeakuulas

– Kaunista.

– Kaunista. Todella kaunista, hän toteaa hymyillen.

Really Beautiful

– Beautiful. Really beautiful, says the woman examining her look in the mirror. She keeps on turning to see her body from all sides. – This is the best so far.

– Would you like to try this one yet? asks the salesperson inviting the woman to come closer. – This is a completely new model. We received it just this very morning.

The woman does as requested and goes to see the new model. Her bare feet sink in soft grass, and the warm glowing sun on the ceiling caresses woman's full nudity. The salesperson guides the woman to the front of the new mirror. She carefully examines herself in the mirror.

– This one is somehow exotically mythical and at the same time extremely western, says the woman after making a quick analysis of what she saw. – I like that glittering complexion, and the almond like eyes, but the body curves are probably too exaggerated for my taste.

Woman moves herself and examines the view in the mirror. Looking thoughtfully, she returns to the previous mirror and critically examines her body through it one more time. She takes another peek in the new mirror, but returns immediately to the one she liked best.

– This is far better, she says. – Can you adjust the skin color to make it a bit richer?

– Actually this light model is designed to have pale skin tone, says the salesperson. – Like this.

– No no no. I like deeper color. Right, that's better. Could you remove couple of years at the same time... That's perfect. I'll take it.

The salesperson praises the woman's good taste, takes the new appearance from the mirror and helps the woman to put it on. The woman strokes her new self and is obviously very pleased. Smoothness and elasticity of her new skin, and its new sensations make her feel fresh vitality.

– Beautiful. Really beautiful, she says smiling.

Loppu

Mies kulkee yksinäisyytensä keskellä pitkin kaupungin sivukujia. Vastaantulijat väistävät miehen katsetta ja kiiruhtavat askeleitaan palauttaakseen etäisyystasapainon itsensä ja miehen välille. Mies painaa katseensa maahan.

Sivukadulla on varasto, jota kohden mies suuntaa askeleensa. Hänellä on kassissa mukanaan sopivaksi katsomansa köysi, jota hän tunnustelee kuin ennakoivaa mielihyvää tuntien. Mies työntää varaston oven auki ja astuu peremmälle kaivaen jo köyttä valmiiksi esille. Mies hymyilee.

– Vartija! Täällä on taas yksi niitä.

Mies nousee koiraa rutistaen. Pyyhkii naamansa hihaansa ja menee matkoihinsa jalat tuskin maata koskettaen.

The End

A man walks in the middle of his loneliness on the back alleys at the outskirts of the town. Everyone avoids looking at the man but hurries to restore a comfortable distance between them. The man looks down. He is tired of his loneliness and determined to end it with a single act.

The man walks toward a storeroom building in a back alley. In his bag he carries a carefully selected piece of rope, occasionally caressing it and feeling the forthcoming pleasure of relief. He pushes the door open and enters the storeroom building and starts to pull the rope out of his bag. He smiles.

– Exit immediately, mister, snaps a worker standing behind the desk.

– But I would like a dog…

– And what would you, mister, do with a dog? Dogs are not delivered to every tramp, not even from a pet shelter like this. You might eat it, or skin it and make mittens from its skin. No. It is a definite no for you, mister. Go out now before I call the police.

– I thought it could be my friend… I already brought the rope for a leash, says the man digging his bag.

– Now, listen to this, mister. We cannot give dogs just to anybody. The dogs are not toys but living creatures. Our responsibility in here is to make sure that they get a decent home or die a worthy death.

– Could I just pat a little that small grey furry one…

– Just go out now, mister. Besides, it is just waste of time to tap that dog. It is finished as soon as the veterinarian arrives.

– I would like to have it...

– I asked you to leave, mister, says the worker tersely and shouts toward the back room – Guard! We have a problem in here, one of them again.

The man lowers his head and goes out without arguing. He sits down on a bench beside the wall of the building. He mourns the small furry dog that was not allowed to leave with him. Tears blur his vision and the figure of the approaching guard.

– Just go away now, says the guard severely. – And hide this.

The guard pushes the small grey furry dog to the man's arms. The man gets up hugging the dog. He wipes his face and walks away with his feet just barely touching the ground.

Siksi tarinan nimenä on "Loppu".

This story could be titled "Alone" instead of "The End". Or rather "The End of Loneliness".

Pieni koira saa napattua itselleen aarteen vasta tuotujen roskien seasta.

A Dog in a Barrel

A little dog runs under the parching heat trying to avoid peoples' kicking legs. With its tail between its legs, it sneaks around the streets, which are full of people. It is trying to grab a piece of food that has fallen from a hawker. However, the hawker kicks it hard on its ribs and it flees whimpering away. The little dog's stomach is squeezed against its backbone and screams for food, any food. The little dog stops briefly and licks water that drips on dry ground. It has time to lick only a couple of drops before it has to flee again.

At night, the little dog is looking for food from the waste people have discarded. It smells many delicious scents, but cannot reach the source of the scent. Litterbins are too heavy to turn over and their covers too difficult to open. A truck stops and a man comes out. He kicks the dog and then picks up the litterbin and empties it on the truck's platform.

The dog follows the scents and reaches the place where the truck left the trashes. It notices that there are many dogs rummaging through the same litter. It sees how poor urchins look through the same litter in competition with dogs, wanting to find the tidbits before them.

The small dog catches a tasty treasure amongst the newly brought rubbish. It bites its teeth hard into it and runs away from the reach of others. At the border between light and darkness, there is an empty barrel lying on its side. The dog slips in and begins to gnaw its treasure. With its stomach full, it goes to sleep and wakes up only when the barrel is surrounded by sobbing children. The small dog pricks up its ears. It tries to decide if it should flee or stay.

Maa

Se on maannut siinä pitkään, karikkeen peittämänä, muuttuen osaksi maata, tuntien maan kosketuksen koko peikkoudessaan.

Peikko painautuu liikkumattomuudessaan kuusen juuria vasten, tuntee niiden maasta nostaman elinvoiman virran. Kuunnellen samalla kuusen latvassa leikkivien tuulten ääniä.

Peikko puhuu äänettömin sanoin kuuselle. Kertoo näkemistään tarinoista, kuulemistaan lauluista, karhusta, ketusta ja pienestä sudesta. Kuusi kätkee peikon kertomukset nilaansa. Huminaksi vuosikasvuunsa, tuulisten päivien lauluksi.

Jonain päivänä peikko nousee liikkumattomuudestaan. Nojautuu kuusta vasten kertoen itselleen tarinat, joita tuuli on huminana kuljettanut puulta toiselle. Peikolta peikolle.

Alkuperäinen

Earth

It lies unmoving below an ancient spruce with beard moss, below the branches, on spruce's lumpy roots. It has lain there for a long time, hidden by detritus, turning to soil, feeling the touch of the land on its trollness.

The inert troll nestles against spruce's roots, feels the stream of vitality that the roots have raised below the ground. It draws impressions from the flow, letting it flow through its thinking, simultaneously, listening how the winds play in the spruce's top.

The troll speaks with silent words to the spruce. It tells about the stories it has seen, about the songs it has heard, about the bear, the fox and a little wolf. The spruce imbibes the stories in its phloem, as a windy day's song in its shoot.

One day the troll will rise from its immobility. It rests against the spruce, unfolding the stories that were carried by winds in form of hum from tree to tree, from troll to troll.

Vesi

Peikko auttaa. Järven koko olemus kirkastuu ja metsässä tuntuu puhtaan veden tuoksu. Järvi käy altaaseensa pitkäkseen, kääntää kylkeään ja kehrää tyytyväisenä.

Water

The troll walks on the water and the snow grates under its feet. The lake giggles gently while the troll's feet tickles its back. It twists its back to get the most itching point under the troll's feet. Finally it stands up with the noise of breaking ice.

The troll hurries on its shoulder. The lake stretches itself and says hello to the troll after noticing it on its shoulder. The lake straightens its arm and the troll swims on nearly vertically standing water on the shore and starts to persuade the snow to come nearer.

The lake scrapes the snow up. It rubs itself and all its slimy stones with handfuls of snow. The troll helps. The quintessence of the lake becomes clear and in the forest the smell of clean water can be smelt. The lake lies down on its pool, turns around and purrs contentedly.

Ilma

Wind

The wind whistles in troll's ears while it seeks trollnuts walking with its seven-league boots. The troll becomes tired with the whistling and stops for a while to pat its ears.

The patting doesn't help but the whistling continues. The troll detaches its ears and beats them against its knee. The wind in the ears rolls out on the troll's knee. The troll grabs it with its black nails, raises it before its face staring strictly to its eyes. The wind makes a horn of its lips and utters a long and rejoicing whistling.

The troll feels a little like laughing and it starts to race-whistle with the wind. Then it pours all the whistling from its whistling-filled ears into heather where it winds like a hundred snakes. The troll engages the ears and continues on its way. The wind hangs on the troll's tail whistling joyfully.

Tuli

Pimeys nousee siivilleen luvaten palata. Peikko irvistää virnistyksen.

Fire

The darkness gets down into the forest. It folds its wings and knocks on the troll's door. The troll opens and asks the darkness to enter the cave.

They sit in silence until the darkness encourages and asks: "May I see it again?"

The troll consents and digs its pockets. There, covered by birch bark, deep in ash, in a sparkle, lives the fire. The troll pours the ashes on its palm, seeks the sparkle and blowing gently, offers it a piece of tinder. The fire reaches out of the sparkle, devours all the tinder and soughs for more.

The darkness nods. Noticing that the troll promises: "We'll build a bonfire". The fire leaps from the sparkle and escapes to the forest. From there it brings dry firewood to the bonfire and starts dancing on it. The darkness is charmed by fire's dance, inhales it and transforms a little out of existence.

The darkness gets on its wings and promises to be back. The troll grins a grimace.
